This map is a version of the WALKING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE LENAPE exhibit in the recently renovated Birdsall Room. It is intended to showcase the extent of the Native American presence in Ocean County. The Ocean County Historical Society volunteers combined their collection of known Native American artifacts with a similar collection in the New Jersey State Museum database, totaling over 200 individual locations. They then used an oversized Ocean County map to plot a dot at the site of every artifact “find”, creating a visual display of the presence of the Lenape throughout the County.
Dr. Geoff Fouad and Michael C. Brown of Monmouth University created this version of our WALKING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE LENAPE map, using RED ICONS for the NJ State Museum database findings and BLUE ICONS for the findings in the Ocean County Historical Society collection.
