Lakehurst Naval Air Station

Lakehurst, NJ

On Saturday, May 24, 2008 Society members and friends gathered at the Museum for a car-pool trip to the Naval Air Station at Lakehurst, NJ. The weather was perfect, and the trip was an interesting and informative one!

Did You Know...

1. The US never had two airships flying at the same time because we had to transfer gas from one airship to another. Will Rogers said, "The Navy has two airships and one set of gas to fly them with."

2. Historic Hanger One is so large that three 747's would fit into it with room to spare at the back.

3. On May 6th, the annual memorial service for everyone who died in lighter-than-air accidents, including those on the HINDENBURG, is held at Naval Air Engineering Station (NAES) Lakehurst.

4. Today only one crew member and one passenger on the HINDENBURG are still alive.
